Moxibustion

Moxa is placed on a protective barrier, then burned to create a penetrating heat.

Moxibustion is a TCM treatment that involves the burning of moxa, the small, spongy Mugwort herb, to facilitate healing. Medical historians believe that moxibustion pre-dated acupuncture and needling came to supplement moxa after the 2nd century BC.

The purpose of moxibustion, as with most forms of TCM, is to strengthen the blood, stimulate the flow of Qi, and maintain general health. Moxibustion is especially effective in the treatment of chronic disease, cold or deficient conditions, and problems experienced by the elderly.

For patients sensitive to the mild smoke released though the moxa burning, the distilled essence of the mugwort is also available in liquid form. This liquid can be applied to the skin and used in conjunction with infrared heat lamps.
